Poverty

We see it everyday. Those infomercials, of young children so thin you see their backbones, with flies flying around, and a host asking for just a little a day, to save them. But it is not only what is filmed into high profit commercials, that is suffering with the disease of Poverty, it is actually everywhere. The statics state that:Almost half the world ? over 3 billion people ? live on less than $2.50 a day. We see it in hometown, we see it in our neighborhoods, we see it on tv, we see it on the news, we see it in the newspaper, poverty is a huge issue.

Family’s struggling with money, mothers not able to provide food for all children, light & power continuously gets cut off, rent months behind, we see all this, and we all hear about this. We all know at least one person/family that is struggling or living in high poverty.

It has become an epidemic, to see how high the percentage of people that are struggling. Its mind boggling to me, to see how common it really is. This is the facts:

* Almost half the world ? over 3 billion people ? live on less than $2.50 a day.
* The GDP (Gross Domestic Product) of the 41 Heavily Indebted Poor Countries (567 million people) is less than the wealth of the world?s 7 richest people combined.
* Nearly a billion people entered the 21st century unable to read a book or sign their names.
* Less than one per cent of what the world spent every year on weapons was needed to put every child into school by the year 2000 and yet it didn?t happen.
* 1 billion children live in poverty (1 in 2 children in the world). 640 million live without adequate shelter, 400 million have no access to safe water, 270 million have no access to health services. 10.6 million died in 2003 before they reached the age of 5 (or roughly 29,000 children per day).

This is truly a sad issue to be occurring but it is a real issue. Be thankful for what you may have, because in the world someone if feeling much worse.
